The Potter and the Clay

A Sovereign God Grants Man Certain Freedom

Blog written by Pastor Charlie of Four Soils Ministry

The purpose of this blog and of Four Soils Ministry is to encourage the understanding and application of God’s Word.

God is the Potter. We are the clay. There is at least two ways to view this thought.

One way is in the literal sense where the clay’s material makeup is determined by the type of soil, but the molding and shaping is in the hands of the potter. The clay has no say so into the type of product it becomes.

Another way to look at this thought is in figurative way where the human (clay) can determine its mold ability, which allows the Potter (God) to shape it.

2 Tim 2:20-21 God states, “Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also vessels of wood and of earthenware, and some to honor and some to dishonor. Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these {things,} (SIN) he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work. Verse 2:22 completes the thought of the individual’s responsibility (mold ability) when it states “Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love {and} peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.”

In the final judgment who does God hold accountable man or Himself?

To learn more about the responsibility of the clay check out the web site of Four Soils Ministry which offers an unique Bible study that reveals this mystery as we look at the unity of the the entire Bible with the central focus on Jesus Christ and Him crucified

 Becoming a Vessel of Honor

Tim 2:20-21 God states, “Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also vessels of wood and of earthenware, and some to honor and some to dishonor. Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these {things,} (SIN) he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.”

God is saying we chose if we want to be a vessel of honor or dishonor and that God judges our results. Which do you desire?

Psalm 119 states I hid the word of God in my heart so I will not sin against God. It goes on to say that the word of God is a light unto my feet and a lamp unto my path.

Are we allowing the Word of God to direct our paths? If we will we will become a vessel of honor!

 God is Sovereign

Blog written by Pastor Charlie of Four Soils Ministry

And yet, LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay, and you are the potter. We were formed by your hand. (Isa 64:8)

When a potter makes jars out of clay, doesn't he have a right to use the same lump of clay to make one jar for decoration and another to throw garbage into? (Rom 9:21)

Mankind is like clay in the potter’s hand. He has the right to make anything He chooses. However, based upon the character of God He desires that we be honorable vessels.

Israel did not turn out as God preferred. However God was not surprised, since He knew before creation that Christ must die for man’s sins. The Bible says “But the jar he was making did not turn out as he had hoped, so the potter squashed the jar into a lump of clay and started again.” (Jer 18:4)

"O Israel, can I not do to you as this potter has done to his clay? As the clay is in the potter's hand, so are you in my hand. (Jer 18:6)

After giving Israel many opportunities to repent, God cast them aside and implemented His plan that was established prior to creation, which was the establishment of the church.

Paul says that we, the church are the temple of the living God. Paul says that God said "I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people."(2 Cor 6:16).

At the end of time in the book of Revelation after Christ comes for His bride the church, God’s Word says " the home of God is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them.” (Rev 21:3)

I pray that you are one of God’s people. Please post comments or questions about God’s Sovereignty.

In the book of 2 Timothy, Paul tells Timothy that he had been taught the Holy Scriptures from childhood, and they had given him the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. Paul goes on to say that all of Scripture is inspired by God, that it is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives, that it straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right, that it is God's way of preparing us in every way, and that it fully equips us for every good thing God wants us to do. (2 Tim 3:15-17)
